Tips for Reading Long Documents

If possible, have in my mind what you are looking for before reading a long document.  If an index or table of contents is not present, try scanning the first words of a paragraph to cue-in on a topic of interest.  Scan for italicized words or capitalized proper nouns to help seek a topic, or check for pictures or images that will be near the text of interest.  When reading a long document on the internet, scan for hyperlinks for your topic that could direct you to a much shorter document.
